4 Things to Consider When Choosing Student Accommodation

Going to university involves a lot of big decisions. In fact, just about every decision surrounding your choice of university will feel like a big choice. Where and what you choose to study will affect your available accommodation options, and your ultimate decision as to where you live will impact your entire university experience.

Choosing the right accommodation will make your whole time at university much more enjoyable. Here are some of the factors you need to consider when you are looking at different student accommodation possibilities.

    Your Price Range

One of the most important things to consider when deciding on accommodation is the amount of money that you want to set aside for it. Different students will have different price limits, but there are usually options available to suit any price range, so don’t be afraid to set your own limits.

Students who are willing to spend a little bit more on their accommodation have the option of something more upmarket than the usual student digs. For example, this student accommodation from Collegiate is available to students studying at the Universities of Cardiff and South Wales. If you take a look at their apartments, you’ll see that they come with a private cinema, onsite gym facilities and 24-hour concierge staff! If this is an option you can afford, then it’s definitely one to snap up.

    The Local Amenities

Before you commit to any student accommodation, make sure that you visit beforehand and have a look at what’s nearby for yourself. You don’t want to end up having to travel out of your way just to get your essentials.  For example, if you have specialist diet requirements, such as being vegan or vegetarian, you will want to ensure that you have sufficient access to your usual cooking ingredients.

Online shopping has definitely helped in this regard, and you can now usually have any shopping you need delivered to your door. However, even if you plan on doing most of your shopping online, make sure that there is plenty in the local area to keep you amused.

    The Internet Situation

Ensuring that you have a reliable and reasonably fast internet connection is essential for the modern student. An unreliable internet connection failing you at the worst possible moment can throw a serious spanner into the works of your academic career. It’s difficult to schedule your study sessions properly when your internet is constantly failing.

Fortunately, most student accommodation today provides reliable internet access. However, it is worth having a look for yourself at the various providers and packages that are on offer. You should look into each option individually and see if you can find any first-hand user reports of the overall quality of service.

    Security

Being away from home and responsible for yourself for the first time can sometimes be an overwhelming experience. The less you have to worry about, the more you will be able to focus on enjoying it. Ensuring that any area you are considering living in is relatively safe and secure will go a long way to putting your mind at ease. Fortunately, it is very easy to check the local crime situation and ensure you are moving somewhere relatively safe.

It is important to take all of these factors into consideration rather than going for the first option you see. After all, you will be spending at least a year there, so you want it to feel like a home from home.
