Unexpected events can throw anyone off track. By taking a step back and the time to regroup, you can find the motivation to overcome those bumps in the road. Follow these five tips when you find your life heading in the wrong direction and you’ll find yourself recharged and back on track in no time.
Focus on the positive. Every unexpected event or situation has a silver lining. A recent flood at my grandmother’s house meant a complete remodeling, something she’s been wanting for a while. What lesson can be learned from your current situation? What opportunities and possibilities might lie ahead?
Clear your mind of clutter. Over time, all of those things that keep getting pushed back by incessant procrastination and slacking off can build up and stress you out, both consciously and subconsciously. You don’t need to necessarily complete these tasks to clear your mind, though. Meditation, for example, is an amazing way to clear the clutter. Embrace your inner Deepak Chopra and find a calm, quiet place to steady your thoughts.
Simplify, wherever possible. Some things in life are non-negotiable. Others? Not so much. Decide what must be done and let the rest of your to-dos go.
And while you’re at it, ditch your old, tired routine or schedule. What isn’t working for you anymore? What’s outdated? I know you may be used to doing things a certain way, but switching things up can be especially beneficial to you psychologically.
Self-care is essential. No surprises here, but exercise is a great way to get out of a slump. Exercise releases endorphins that leave you happier and more relaxed than before. And don’t forget to treat yourself! A day at the spa, a long, relaxing bath, or lunch out with the girls really helps me to unplug and recharge when I’m feeling out sync with my life’s balance. Hell, even getting the right amount of sleep you need is considered pampering when you haven’t been getting your rest.
Re-examine your goals and motivations. If your goals or career pursuits are causing your slump, it may be helpful to ask yourself why you set those goals in the first place. What is the meaning and purpose behind them? What will it mean to accomplish them? Reviewing my mission and goals help to reignite my passion and excitement when I’m in need of motivation.
