One of my favorite body care products is the sugar scrub.
From Carol’s Daughter Sweet Honey Dip Chocolate Brown Sugah Scrub to Burt’s Bees Cranberry and Pomegranate Sugar Scrub, I L-O-V-E sugar scrubs!
For those of us with dry skin (especially perfect for the harsh weather we’re currently dealing with in the northeast), sugar scrubs can be a lifesaver and making your own scrub is ridiculously easy. I’ve dabbled in some of my own creations, which I’ve included below.
Basic Sugar Scrub:
1 cup of granulated sugar
3 tsp. of fixed oil of your choice (I use fractionated coconut oil)
Mix the sugar and oil until you have a paste-like texture.
Cinnamon Coconut Sugar Scrub
1 cup of granulated sugar
5 tsp. pure honey
5 tsp. cinnamon
3 tsp. coconut oil
This scrub is great for people with dry skin, body acne and several common skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis. Cinnamon has amazing beauty benefits, as it plumps out the skin by bringing blood and oxygen to the surface.
Brown Sugar Honey Scrub
2 cups raw brown sugar
1/2-cup olive oil
1/4-cup pure honey
1 tsp. vanilla
Honey contains high potassium, antioxidant and antiseptic properties, which enable it to shrink your pores without drying out the skin. Not only does honey moisturize the skin, but it helps to seal in moisture as well. And it’s perfect for all skin types!
Other benefits of honey: Reduces inflammation caused by skin fungal infections, and sunburn, reduces the appearance of scar tissue and aids in tightening the skin. I’m excited to experiment with other ingredients like cocoa, peppermint and coffee beans…all of which are known for their cosmetic/aroma-therapeutic benefits.
If you have sensitive skin, I would definitely recommend testing these scrubs on a small area first.
