Beverly Osemwenkhae is a force to be reckoned with. Her love for fashion is evident through her daily ensemble and exquisite eye for style. The Brooklyn-raised wardrobe stylist recently decided to plunge into the fields of entrepreneurship by launching Project Bee, an independent wardrobe styling business. In her interview with BAUCE, Beverly shares fashion tips, discusses what it’s like to be a business owner, and shares what other young women can do to make it in the fashion industry.
BAUCE: At what age did you fall in love with fashion and how did you get started?
Beverly: I fell in love with fashion at the age of 14. I was introduced to this industry through my best friend when I attended middle school. She had an eye for fashion and design. She was the girl who brought fashion magazines to art class! My career in fashion started as a college student. I interned in the Public Relations departments of luxury fashions houses such as Lanvin and Christian Louboutin. I also had the opportunity to work in the accessories department of Cosmopolitan Magazine! #shoeheaven
BAUCE: What has been your fashion experience prior to starting Project Bee?
Beverly: Prior to launching Project Bee, I freelanced as a fashion/wardrobe stylist for a few years. As a wardrobe stylist, I produced and styled editorials for US and International fashion magazines. I also had the chance to work with actors like Stephanie Szostak and Matt Passmore from USA TV series show, “Satisfaction”. I recently did a photo shoot with actress, Amy Carlson!
BAUCE: What are some of the advantages and challenges of running your own business?
Beverly: As an entrepreneur, you’re always busy! I find myself constantly making a to-do list and multi-tasking. I’m always on a schedule because I have a full-time job and it’s important for me to manage my time effectively and efficiently, which means getting up two hours earlier or going home after work to work, instead of making an appearance at happy hour. There are sacrifices that have to be made at times, but finding balance is key and being committed is vital.
The biggest advantage is the beauty of doing what you love. When your career is something you’re passionate about, you never feel like you’re working!
BAUCE: What is your fashion career dream? How do you envision growing Project Bee?
Beverly: My fashion career dream is celebrity styling. I enjoy challenging myself and revamping or creating a new look for someone. My next step for Project Bee is working on a curated online boutique. I hope to launch it before the holidays!
BAUCE: What would be your advice for young women looking to get into the fashion industry?
Beverly: Apply for internships and network! Interning is like boot camp. It prepares you for the real world. Take your internships seriously! It’s NOT glamorous but working hard and being a team player doesn’t get unnoticed. Also try doing different internships, which can help you get a perspective of where you see yourself working.
BAUCE: Now for some fun. What are your personal fashion do’s and don’ts for summer?
Beverly: My biggest fashion do is the LWD (little white dress). Wearing white is so crisp and fresh. I live in white jeans for the summer. My personal don’t is anything studded! Studs are DONE!
BAUCE: When it comes to traveling in style, how can women travel “more” with “less”?
Beverly: Women can travel more with less by pre-packing. Taking 15 minutes a day to pull a dress or a few things out of your closet you will love to wear on your trip. You don’t necessarily have to put it in your suitcase, but it helps give you an idea. I usually pack transitional pieces, things I can wear in the daytime and also in the evening. I also pack statement jewelry and accessories because that’s what really completes the outfit :)
BAUCE: How would you recommend women deal with a fashion emergency while abroad (a shoe breaks, forgot a bra, etc.)? Is it necessary to buy things that you already have at home?
Beverly: In cases of a fashion emergency, there are always safety pins and double sides tape that can be found at your local drug store, but if you need a bra, then buy a bra. I usually pack a black pair of ballet flats when I go out. The ballet flats roll up and can even fit in my clutch!!
BAUCE: What is your style motto?
Beverly: Less is more and balance is key – look effortless!
