3 Side Hustles To try if you’re short on time

By Kiersten BrownSeptember 17, 20255 Mins Read

You’re working full-time, yet your paycheck barely covers the bills. You’ve been meaning to start a side hustle to increase your cash flow, but you struggle to find the time. Between working from sunup to sundown, running errands, and attending appointments, finding another way to earn money seems impossible.

Yet what seems unattainable just takes patience and strategy. All you need is 5–10 hours a week and the right side hustle to bring in some extra cash.

Here are some side hustles you can start, even when you’re short on time.

Finding Time for Your Side Hustle

Since it’s impossible to clone yourself, any side hustle you start will require your time and attention. That’s why it’s important to first understand how much time you actually have to commit. Take a look at your current schedule and ask yourself the following:

    • What does my current schedule look like?
    • Are there obligations or responsibilities I can cut or delegate to free up more time?
    • How many hours can I realistically dedicate to a side hustle?
    • Can I sustain a side hustle long-term?
    • What resources can I use to help me get started?

Your answers to these questions will give you a clear idea of whether starting a side hustle is realistic right now. If your circumstances make it difficult, consider setting a deadline. For example, if now isn’t the right time, schedule a date one month from now to revisit the idea.

During those 30 days, use any spare time to research side hustles that interest you. If you have the time, space, and energy to begin now, here’s how you can get started

3 Side Hustles You Can Do in Your Spare Time

While there are countless side hustles to choose from, it’s important to pick one that matches your interests and abilities.

Since your time is limited, focus on a side hustle you can easily get started with and that fits your schedule. Many side hustles fail not because they’re bad ideas, but because they can’t be consistently maintained.

    1. Sell Items Online

We all have items we no longer use. Your drawers are probably stuffed with gifts you didn’t want but felt guilty throwing away. Instead of letting these forgotten things take up space, sell your gently used—or even brand-new—items.

Platforms like Facebook Marketplace and TikTok Shop allow users to make quick cash. Here’s how to get started:

    Declutter in small chunks
Don’t try to declutter your entire home at once. Instead, pick a specific area to organize. For example, dedicate three hours to clearing out your hallway closet, or spend an afternoon going through boxes in your garage.

    Sort and prepare items
As you go through your belongings, set aside items in good condition, those that need only minor repairs, or name-brand items. Dust them off, spruce them up, and get ready to list them online.

Tips to increase your chances of a sale:

    • Follow the platform’s guidelines
    • Take clear, well-lit photos
    • List the brand name first, then the item type (e.g., Nike running shoes)
    • Comparison shop and price competitively
    • Write descriptive listings using keywords buyers might search for

    2. Freelance Social Media Management

Social media is a powerful tool for individuals and companies to grow their businesses. However, not every business has the time, resources, or know-how to maintain a strong online presence. That’s where you come in.

If you already spend a good amount of time on social media and understand the basics of how it works, consider using that knowledge to help companies grow their presence online.

    Build a simple portfolio
Start by creating a small portfolio of your work. This could include a few sample posts that demonstrate your understanding of content creation, captions, and visuals.

    Look for opportunities
Once your portfolio is ready, start researching local businesses—or even online brands—you’re familiar with. Pay attention to those who post inconsistently or have mediocre content. Reach out and offer to manage their social media for them.

    3. Virtual Assistant (VA)

As mentioned before, business owners often juggle day-to-day tasks like answering emails, updating websites, and organizing data. These time-consuming responsibilities are often avoided or pushed aside, which is why many entrepreneurs hire virtual assistants.

You can work as a virtual assistant by dedicating just 5–10 hours a week. To get started, gain some basic experience and then begin approaching potential clients.

You may also already have transferable skills from your current job—such as communication, organization, or project management—that you can use to succeed as a virtual assistant.

You may be thinking that many people are relying on artificial intelligence to do their administrative tasks. However, many people aren’t comfortable using AI. Yes, generative AIs can write an email for you, but it may come out inaccurate, be written in the wrong tone, or sound unprofessional.

As a virtual assistant, you can stand out by knowing how to use AI to better perform tasks.

Key Tips for Making Real Money with a Side Hustle

Whether you choose one of these side hustles or something entirely different, two things will help you succeed. The first is addressing a problem. Every business exists to solve a problem—even if that problem is simply curing boredom with entertainment.

If you’re looking to make money, start by identifying what problems people are trying to solve. Once you’ve pinpointed those problems, consider your own skills and talents. Ask yourself: How can I use my abilities to provide a solution to a common problem?
