    The Psychology of Kissing

It’s a Saturday night in the early 1960’s. Sally and Mark have decided to go on a date to see a movie that was playing at the local drive-in theater. Sally has been crushing on Mark since her second year in high school, and Mark has been eyeing her for the last few months, becoming entirely infatuated with her beautiful hazel eyes and her chestnut brown hair.

After greeting their friends and saying a hello to anyone they knew that night, Sally and Mark finally settled down into the Ford Mustang that his parents recently bought him as an early high school graduation present.

The movie begins, and about halfway thorough the film, the vibe between the two grows intense but they continue with the comfortable conversation that went about at the start of the movie. With only 15 minutes left to watch it, Mark agrees that it is time to make a move. His right arm graces itself behind her back, and he slowly pushes her towards him. Gently, he begins to kiss her softly on the cheek, working her way to her nose, and Sally lets him work his magic. Without any hesitation, Mark intently presses his lips on the top of hers, igniting a potential flame between the moment of the here and now.

Sally and Mark’s young love is the epitome of an old school romance, a fictional description that brings light to one bigger idea: the reasons behinds why people kiss. Unlike this story of pure infatuation, the act (and art) of kissing is very much psychological.

    The History of The Kiss

The affair of kissing stemmed from the animalistic practice in which primate mothers chewed up the food for their children and fed it to them mouth-to-mouth. This psychology blog quotes ethologist Desmond Morris wh suggested that kissing was developed from this practice and has grown to emotional importance among human beings.

    The Biology of Kissing

When people have passionate kisses, there is a lot that is going on physically. The goose bumps on the arm begin to expose themselves and there is always that rush of adrenaline. But there is more to it than just what’s on the ‘surface.’ Kissing triggers the dopamine found in the brain, which is affiliated with the romance felt between the two people committing the act. At the same time, kissing also influences other hormones in the body, such as coritsol, which drops when couples hold hands or touch affectionately (and that’s a good thing). The other is oxytocin, which is the main hormone behind the human orgasm.

And this is a sidebar: Interesting enough, males prefer more saliva than women when making out.

    Flavors of The Kiss

We now understand the biology and history of kissing, but there’s one other part of the story to touch upon: the different types of kisses. Like people who are different, there are certain ‘flavors’ of kissing that people may experience. According to this blog about passionate kisses, people can definitely spice up the way they press those lips on one another.

The chocolate kiss involves eating a candy bar (anything with chocolate or caramel) and French kissing your partner. (It’s supposed to be the best method).

The feeding kiss is similar to the chocolate kiss but instead your actually feeding your partner that candy while you kiss. It sounds like a bit of work, but it’s definitely worth it.

The milk kiss requires the two lovers to sip a bit of milk and releasing it into the partner’s mouth, creating an extremely intimate experience. And this method goes great with French kissing as well.

In addition to these flavored methods, there are the “basics”: butterfly kiss, single-lip kiss (highly recommended for the on-the-edge couple), Spiderman kiss, and the list goes on. Get more ideas here and check out our favorite picks in the list below!

Whether you are living the movie theater romance, or have been with your special someone for plenty years, the kiss will always be something to look forward to. It not only keeps things good in the relationship but it brings back a sense of intimacy that is grounded within the relationship.

    1.The Butterfly Kiss

To give someone a butterfly kiss, get close to them so the tips of your eyelashes are touching theirs. Then blink very fast so your eyelashes flutter together like butterfly wings. It’s a fun, cute thing to do while you’re catching your breath from more traditional kisses. You can also give someone a solo butterfly kiss by fluttering your eyelids against their cheek.

    2. The Biting Kiss

The biting kiss is a more aggressive form of the French kiss. Like the French kiss, it’s open-mouthed and incorporates tongue, but as you pull back, your teeth lightly grab onto your sweetie’s tongue for just a second. Try it once and see how your partner responds. Some people love it, but others think it’s painful or weird.

    3. The Single-Lip Kiss

To give someone a single-lip kiss, take one of their lips between yours and gently suck or tug on it. It’s an awfully romantic kiss, and if you do it right, you’ll send tingles up and down your sweetie’s spine.

    4. The Spiderman Kiss

Based on the kiss in the 2002 movie Spider-Man, the Spiderman kiss involves kissing someone whose face is upside-down from yours, so your top lip kisses their bottom lip and vice versa.

    5. The Earlobe Kiss

A great kiss to to perform while you’re taking a break from lip kisses, the earlobe kiss involves taking someone’s earlobe lightly between your lips and tugging gently downward. For a more intense earlobe kiss, add a little bit of tongue, or use a gentle sucking motion on their earlobe.

    6. The Lip Gloss Kiss

This is a fun, flirty kiss for girlfriends to give their boyfriends. Put on a healthy amount of lip gloss or ChapStick, then rub your lips on your partners’ lips until theirs are coated, too. For extra fun, surprise your partner with a sweet, fruity lip gloss flavor.

    7. The Eskimo Kiss

In an Eskimo kiss, two people rub their noses back and forth against each other. It’s based on real kisses that people in Eskimo cultures give their friends. Just like with lip kisses, Eskimo kisses are best executed with your eyes closed.

    8. The Cheek Kiss

The cheek kiss is exactly what it sounds like – a closed-mouth kiss against someone’s cheek. Cheek kisses can be used as friendly greetings, flirty thank-you’s or cute, unexpected ways to say good-bye to your boyfriend or girlfriend.

    9. The Lizard Kiss

The lizard kiss involves flicking your tongue in and out of your partner’s mouth in tight, quick strokes (picture the way a lizard moves its tongue). This is a silly kiss you can try just for fun, but it generally should be avoided because it feels kind of creepy to get.

    10. The Secret Message Kiss

In the middle of a French kiss, spell out a secret message with the tip of your tongue against their tongue. It might feel a little funny to the other person, but at least you’ll be getting your message across.
