The rags to riches black film director and producer is currently discussing the development of his own cable channel with Lionsgate, the New York Times reported.
The network would be called “TylerTV” and would feature reruns of Perry’s sitcoms and movies, including the Madea series that made Perry so popular. Programming would also include third-party content that matches Perry’s brand.
The success of Perry’s new project is being juxtaposed alongside Oprah Winfrey’s struggling position with OWN. Perry has garnered large support from the African-American community, however some individuals like filmmaker Spike Lee perceive Perry’s work as “coonery” and “buffoonery”.
