Mark Naison, an African-American history professor who goes by the stage name of Notorious PhD, performed “Not in the Bronx” last Thursday at the Urban Plunge, an annual planned community service event for Fordham freshmen. He wants for Fordham students to have more concern over the city they liv ein and help protect the Bronx residents from being crowded out.
“The Bronx is the last refuge for working-class, immigrant New York,” Naison, a 30-year resident of Park Slope, Brooklyn, said. “I don’t want to walk through the Bronx and see Park Slope.”
This isn’t the first time Naison has used the mic to educate the public. He began rapping years ago when he first taught history to public school students in the Bronx.
According to Gregory Lobo Jost, a deputy director of University Neighborhood Housing Program, a Bronx non-profit organization, Naison has little to worry about.
