Cody Crawford was arrested last Wednesday night on federal hate crimes indictments. Crawford is said to have set fire tot the Salman Alfarisi Islamic Center in Corvallis on November 28, two days after FBI agents arrested a Somali-American for plotting to set off a bomb at Portland’s annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony.
Crawford calls himself a “Christian Warrior” who had fears of “secret Muslims”. He suffers from bipolar disorder and alcoholism. According to prosecutors and defense attorneys, he was recently hospitalized in a mental health facility after being found waving a knife around in his front yard.
U.S. Attorney Dwight Holton told a news conference last Thursday that his motives were both racial and religious in nature and that federal authorities will be pursing a criminal conviction against Crawford.
“Freedom of religion is essential to who we are as Americans. We will not tolerate attacks based on faith,” he said in a statement.
The fire allegedly set by Crawford was contained to one room and no one was hurt. If convicted, Crawford could face 10 to 30 years behind bars.
